Moslem Dress and Tourists

Moslem dress is dominant in Zanzibar and on parts of the mainland’s coastal strip with the various different branches of the faith resulting in different levels of strictness about “covering up”. Where black is still the most common colour for female adherents, in some cases, kikoys are used as scarves and shawls, resulting in great splashes of colour. The men’s dishdashas, on the other hand, are mostly white with a small kufi on the head. Visitors should be aware of Moslem customs and avoid clothing likely to cause offence, such as short skirts or skimpy T-shirts. Whilst the resorts are prepared for Western ways, the people in the streets can be severely shocked by displays of bare skin!
