Things have come to a Pretty Pass

The two Bains, father and son, built most of the road passes linking the Cape Coast with the interior. Meiringspoort and its dirt road neighbour, the Swartberg Pass, were built by Thomas Charles Bain along with no fewer than 22 other major passes. His father Andrew Geddes Bain built only eight passes but was presented with 'fine cutlery and a candelabrum' for his trouble by grateful colonists. I am sure he was delighted. We can picture him in his road camp enjoying a barbecue by candlelight with silver knives and forks!
