Malawi’s first permanently settled people were Bantu from the north, who formed villages in 1500 along the central section of the lake and westwards into what is now Zambia. By 1600 these people were trading with the Portuguese and by the 1700s their tribal cohesions seemed to be disintegrating.

Bushmen, Damara and Namaqua people have lived in Namibia since early times with significant Bantu incursions occurring from 1300 AD onwards. The first Europeans to set foot on Africa’s south-west coast were Portuguese and included Bartolomeu Dias, but they did not put down any roots. Just crosses.

An Old Trout Hideaway

Dullstroom is one of the coldest towns in South Africa and has its highest railway station but to most people it has become synonymous with one activity - fly-fishing. Trout were introduced into the rivers from hatcheries in the Cape Winelands as long ago as 1916 so ... when the rest of the world was fighting a war, Dullstroom went fishing. And it has been fishing ever since. Brown, rainbow and golden trout have all thrived and are present in dams throughout the area. The numerous weekend homes and lodges have also hatched some very fine eateries with one common theme to the menu. You guessed it.
