The area which is now the Republic of Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) was initially inhabited by hunter-gatherer tribes for thousands of years and something of a crossroads in the migrations of Bantu and specifically Nguni peoples. The largest known primary reserves of platinum in the world are to be found in the South African bush, making the Bafokeng people far more money than Sun City was ever likely to raise, even with its can-can girls, gaming tables and 60s revival concerts. The Bushveld Igneous Complex covers an area the size of Ireland. The platinum mined here is used in vehicle emission control, jewellery, electronic components and even cancer drugs. 78% of the world’s platinum comes from South Africa and 95% of that comes from the north-western region.
