Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama Private Game Reserve occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park. At 13 000 hectares, it is the largest singleowner game reserve in the region, and Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit) is minutes from the reserve and Kapama includes free airport transfers.

 

Kapama has all the big game of Africa with approximately 350 bird species and 42 mammals, including the Big Five. Game drives are conducted through the rolling savannah grasslands and riverine forests that make up this appealing reserve. Kapama Lodge is a luxurious traditional safari lodge with air-conditioned thatched chalets positioned around a reed fringed lake.

 

Kapama Buffalo Camp comprises eight luxury two-sleeper canvas tents, set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank and connected by wooden walkways. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

 

Kapama River Lodge offer guests a option of three types of accommodation – suites, spa suites or royal suites. Each spacious room features a full en-suite bathroom and terrace with uninterrupted views of the reserve. The central guest entertainment areas include a large rim flow swimming pool and relaxation lounge and bar which curves around the pool. The Rhino Boma dining area has a roaring outdoor fire and buffet-style meals introduce African flavours.

 

Kapama Karula – “the place of peace” is curently being rebuilt into an extraordinary tented camp. The latest addition to Kapama is the luxurious wellness centre which aims to energize and uplift in the healing presence of nature.

The décor of the twenty suites at Kapama Lodge are as eclectic as nature itself with colours and shapes mirroring the natural world; whole log door frames, twisted stem lamps, coir mats and curling metal-framed furniture.

Luxurious twin or king size beds are a vision of white with crisp linens and pleats of mosquito netting falling into a four-poster effect.

Rooms offer all the amenities associated with a quality establishment; minibar, air conditioner, tea and coffee station, electronic safe, telephone, gowns, and luggage rack and 24 hour duty staff.

40 Kapama River Lodge
 

Kapama River Lodge features 40 spacious air-conditioned suites, with modern yet distinctly African furnishings and log-beam ceilings under a golden thatch. Step onto your private balcony with an iced drink from your mini bar, and while away free time looking lazily into the bush for animals that may pass by.

There's tea and coffee at your disposal too. Bathrooms are all en-suite with his and hers basins, bath and shower, complimentary toiletries and lotions and fluffy white towels.

8 Kapama Buffalo Camp
 

Kapama Buffalo Camp has eight safari tents, upholding the best traditions of a luxury safari camp. They are set on stilts high amongst the treetops overlooking a seasonal riverbed. The branches of bush willows and leadwood trees crowd towards your balcony, and as you scan the treetops, you might well look straight into the face of a vervet monkey staring right back at you. Raised wooden walkways connect the tented safari rooms and lead to the main lodge on the riverbank.

The wooden-floored tented rooms feature twin beds with white linen and African design bedspreads. Fleecy throws and heated under blankets keep out the cold on winter nights. Like any other luxury bedroom, Buffalo Camp suites have an en-suite bathroom with shower and a dressing room with wardrobe and suitcase stand. Leather finishes and a stand-alone fan give the decor an old African touch.

7 Kapama Karula
 

This extraordinary camp, based on the recently acquired Gwalagwala camp has now been rebuild into one of the finest Camps in many respects. Consisting of seven luxury air-conditioned tents and five large exclusive chalets are the epitome of luxury. Each with a his and hers basin, inside and outside shower and sliding glass doors that will wrap around the chalet 260 degrees to offer guest the opportunity to have unrestricted views onto one of the most sought after locations – the Klaserie river. The 115m² chalets are air-conditioned and comes with every form of luxury most can think of.

The new lounge, dining room, bar, pool and pooldeck as well as other guest entertainment areas will impress the best of connoisseurs. All of course with unrestricted views onto the Klaserie river.

Directions

Take either the N12 or the N4 from Johannesburg to Witbank and Middelburg. Turn onto the R540 towards Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg. Dullstroom is set on the highveld and is an ideal point for exploring the region. The village has a quaint old-world atmosphere and is famous for its trout fishing. This is an ideal halfway stop on the way to Kapama Private Game Reserve. From Lydenburg proceed on the R36 to Orighstad, through the Strydom Tunnel to Hoedspruit.

This scenic drive through Mpumalanga has awesome landscapes and unforgettable views. Drive up the mountain passes onto the escarpment and look down onto the wonders of the lowveld. At the Strydom Tunnel there are a number of stalls selling ethnic curios from the area.

At Hoedspruit, take the R40 to Klaserie.

For Kapama Lodge, continue on the R40 and turn left at the Eastgate Airport turn-off and continue for 15 km. Turn right at the Guernsey turn-off and continue on the gravel road for another 10 km. The Kapama Lodge entrance will be on your left-hand side.

For Kapama River Lodge, Buffalo Camp and Kapama Karula, continue on the R40 until you reach the entrance on your left-hand side.
