This exclusive hotel, reminiscent of a gracious country house, was originally a 19th-century holiday mansion. It is built on a rocky headland separating the two main swimming beaches.
Exclusivity is the keynote of The Plettenberg and each of the 40 rooms has been individually decorated with chintzes, antiques and original South African art. The rooms all have superb views and each has a private bathroom, colour television and direct-dial telephone.
There is a private residents’ bar, and candle-lit dining brings back memories of the elegance of a bygone era. Specialities on the menu are freshly caught local fish and Karoo lamb. Continental breakfasts, light lunches and teas are served at The Blue Wing in the enclosed terrace overlooking the second rim-flowpool.
