In the early 1900s, Oudtshoorn became South Africa’s ”Ostrich Capital” and Rietfontein was the first ostrich farm. The farm was established by the Potgieter Family in 1879 and by 1910 it was the world’s biggest, carrying 10 000 birds. Today it is still a working ostrich farm, and Kobus and Elmare Potgieter look forward to welcoming guests on a guided tour or to view the exterior of the Victorian Feather Palace. Guests can enjoy country-cooking and South African hospitality at the restaurant from 08h30 – 16h45. Accommodation comprises peaceful and secluded cottages on the farm on a bed-and-breakfast basis, with dinner on request. Rietfontein is within easy driving distance of the famous Cango Caves, the dramatic Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert and the Indian Ocean.
We are on the R62, between Oudtshoorn (32 km) & Calitzdorp (18 km).
