Situated in Durban city centre, 1.5km from the ICC, The Royal Hotel opened as Durban’s first hostelry in 1845. Following a Royal Appointment granted by Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred, the hotel was named The Royal Hotel in 1860 and since then, won many awards, earning the reputation as one of the world’s finest, hosting prominent guests including Cecil John Rhodes, Rider Haggard, Marlene Dietrich, Mark Twain, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Nelson Mandela. The Royal Hotel’s principle of uncompromising service and unfailing hospitality has always been a cornerstone with high standards continuously refined in sheer comfort with subtle blends of Colonial and African influences.

Each of the hotel’s en-suite rooms reflects the past and present, breathtaking views of the harbour complemented by a rich unique look and feel. While pleasure is The Royal’s business, business itself receives expert attention with a choice of conferencing and banqueting facilities. The Lounge area, better known as the Royal Palm, is a popular meeting place both as a work area or meeting venue. The Royal Coffee Shop serves light meals and selection of cakes and delicacies throughout the day. The 70-year old flagship restaurant, the Royal Grill, which has recently undergone extensive refurbishments, presenting diners with the finest dining experience served in an elegant and sophisticated milieu of timeless grandeur.
