The original hotel, a national monument, dates back to the gold-digging boom of the 19th century and has been impeccably restored to its former glory. The historic Church Bar, originally a school chapel in Cape Town, was dismantled in 1870 and shipped to Maputo to serve as a church, before being transported to Pilgrim's Rest by ox-wagon.
The 50 bedrooms have brass four-poster beds, wooden ceiling fans, marble-and-oak washstands and Victorian ball-and-claw baths with heavy gold taps. Meals are served at the Digger's Den Pub or on the veranda.
Weddings are specifically catered for. Pilgrim's Rest, known for its homecrafts, has preserved the best of the past including the old diggings, a gold mine, the museums, the print works, churches and period homes.
