Situated on 15 hectares of forested hillside overlooking the Umfolozi Riverlodge valley and bordering a private game reserve, Umfolozi River Lodge is approximately a 30-minute drive from St Lucia, Richards Bay Airport, Mapelane beach and the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Park, home to a large variety of wildlife including the Big Five. Accommodation is under thatch and the licensed restaurant offers breakfast, light lunches and dinner. Scenic walking trails along the Msunduzi river, which pass through a variety of nut groves, offer excellent bird-watching opportunities. The lodge’s bird park has aviaries of exotic birds and Koi fish ponds, while the farmyard houses ponies, rabbits and other farm animals. Both are open daily from 07h00 to 17h00. Other nearby attractions include quads and whale-watching tours in season.
From Durban:
Use the N2 highway and pass, Stanger, Empangeni, Richards Bay and Kwambonambi (± 2 hours drive). Turn right at the Eteza/Mapelane Turn off. Turn right and follow signage.
From Gauteng:
Use the N2 highway pass the towns of Witbank, Bethal, Ermelo, Pietretief, Pongola, Mkhuze,Hluhluwe, Mtubatuba. Remain on the N2 and cross the uMfolozi river, the road will fork to the left, branch off to the left, at the stop street turn left again, continue along the road crossing a train track. Follow signage to the Umfolozi River Lodge & Bird Park.
